 Speakers:

Chris Benner is a Partner in the Personal Financial Services practice of Bennett Thrasher, LLP.  He leads our growing international individual segment of the practice which includes taxation of expatriates, nonresident aliens, and U.S. persons with various cross-border taxation issues.  These issues could include reporting previously undisclosed foreign ? nancial assets under the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP), domestic and foreign streamlined offshore procedures, FBAR compliance, foreign asset reporting, international estate planning, and expatriation analysis.  Chris also has a signi? cant practice catering to the tax and ? nancial planning needs of high net worth individuals and those in the entertainment industry.


 

MATTHEW S. PAOLILLO ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY, Gomel, Davis & Watson

Matt's primary area of practice includes representing individuals and businesses with tax controversy and compliance issues with the Internal Revenue Service and various state tax authorities. He advises clients on responding to audit examinations and collection actions, and develops strategies to minimize potential taxes, penalties, and interest. Matt's tax controversy experience includes negotiating collection alternatives, such as offers in compromise and installment agreements, and filing audit protests, penalty abatement requests, audit reconsiderations, and petitions for innocent spouse relief.  Matt’s substantive and procedural experience includes cases tried at the Internal Revenue Service audit and appeals levels, as well as in the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth, and Federal Circuits.

Matt also works closely with clients to develop estate and business plans that accomplish their personal goals while minimizing tax and other costs. He has experience drafting wills, trust agreements and other estate planning documents, as well as LLC and partnership operating agreements, purchase agreements, and other business contracts.

Prior to joining Gomel, Davis & Watson, Matt served as an Attorney Advisor to Judge Elizabeth Crewson Paris of the U.S. Tax Court.  In his time at the Tax Court, Matt gained extensive experience in the practice and procedure of tax controversy at the judicial level--including advising and assisting in the drafting of opinions, orders, and memoranda for the Court on a wide range of substantive tax issues.

Matt lives in Atlanta. He enjoys attending concerts, playing golf, fishing, and watching college football.
